Lower Caverns

Whelping Dens

While it is tradition for the alpha pair of the pack to be the only ones to whelp and raise the puppies, other wolves are allowed to take mates as long as they are not part of the pack - or have the alpha's permission. Most females make use of the Lost Rooms during the whelping period. When a wolf whelps her pups some are claimed by Weyr residents while others are bonded or taken by travelers and other folk that visit the Weyr. Check here to see if any pups are available.

The Whelping Dens (aka the Lost Rooms) are located between the Hatching Sands and the Lower Caverns along a long, narrow corridor that is all but forgotten about by most weyrfolk. Because of this, it's ideal for a female wolf who takes a mate to give birth and raise her young. Most bonded females will choose to whelp here rather then their weyrmate's weyr just to make sure the puppies don't fall off the ledge weeks later.

All puppies are given a chance to bond and most will or do leave the Weyr with holders, sea-traders, or off-world visitors. At about 2 months of age, the mother will bring them into the Lower Caverns for people to meet them and allow them to mingle and get use to human (and dragon) interatcion. Puppies are not allowed to leave their mother until they are four months old and have been taught the basics in using their powers. As most wolves are not permitted to fly until they are around nine months old, they tend to cause a lot of trouble while they wait to find a suitable bond. The humans tend to act like the other wolves in a pack, caring for them and teaching them manners. Unless the puppies are born to the Weyr Pack and whelped at the Den, they will be found in the Lower Caverns. Sesep and Eunos bring their puppies to the Weyr at about three months.
